Chemical Peels, Laser Therapy, and More: 4 Ways to Treat Acne Scars

Acne breakouts may have left scars on your skin, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to live with the scarring for the rest of your life. Skin treatments that are designed to erase or at least minimize scarring are available, and the right treatment for you may yield the long-lasting results that you’ve been wanting.

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel can renew and smoothen your skin and reduce the appearance of scarring while also reducing the hyperpigmentation that can make scars more noticeable. Some superficial acne scars may seem to disappear entirely after this treatment. To perform a chemical peel, a skincare expert applies a solution to the skin that peels away the top layers to reveal the newer, healthier skin that lies in the deeper layers. A chemical peel solution that peels away even more skin layers may be recommended if you have deeper scarring.

Laser Therapy

Laser technology often works great for removing acne scars, and you won’t have to endure any cutting or injections when you undergo this treatment. Before the LED blue light that’s used for laser therapy is emitted onto your skin, a levulinic acid solution is applied to the skin so that a chemical reaction can occur when the light hits it. This chemical reaction can improve skin quality dramatically, which makes laser therapy one of the most reliable skin rejuvenation treatments for acne scars.

Microdermabrasion

Similar to a chemical peel, microdermabrasion is done to remove the top layer of skin, but a handpiece or crystal spray is used instead of a chemical solution. In addition to revealing a healthier underlying skin layer, microdermabrasion can increase collagen production, which can make the skin more buoyant and acne scars less noticeable. This treatment usually isn’t recommended for raised acne scars but could work well if your scarring has an indented appearance.

Injectable Filler

If you don’t mind needles too much, an injectable filler may help fill in the sunken, hollow areas of certain acne scars. You might be able to wait six months to possibly over a year before you need to get more injections to keep your skin looking full and plump and hide acne scars. Bellafill, Juvederm and Sculptra are often considered to be among the best fillers for acne scars.
