How To Stay Healthy At The Office

Many people have jobs where they are stationary during the entire work day. Sitting at a desk in front a monitor for hours at a time is unhealthy because our bodies were not designed to sit in one spot for too long. If you don’t take the proper precautions you will feel the symptoms of neglecting your body. Researchers have shown that sitting for long periods of time can increase the risk of diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, heart disease and it has even been linked to cancer. But sitting too long is not the only issue, your eyes get tired form the lighting in the office and staring at the screen for hours will strain your eye muscles.

Meals

Healthy well thought out meals will stabilise your blood sugar levels and increase your productivity by 20 precent. Make sure you have a healthy snack between breakfast and lunch. Many people at the office have some snacks and candies that are for everyone. While they might be tempting and easy to reach you should avoid them, not only because they are unhealthy but because you’ll develop a snacking habit. If you don’t have time to prepare your lunch avoid unhealthy foods, instead go for office fruit delivery. The fruit will stabilise your blood sugar levels and will also provide you with minerals and fibre.

Hydration

Keeping hydrated while at work will raise your brain function and reduce the risk of many diseases. A person should drink about eight to six glasses of water a day to stay hydrated. Many will feel like they couldn’t possibly drink anymore, but the trick is to stick to it the first couple of days and you will see that your body will get used to it.

Eyes

Forcing your eyes to read what’s written on the screen can give you headaches and it can even make you feel sick. It is suggested to keep your computer screen in the range from 35 to 70 centimetres from your head, at a 15 to 20 degree angle so that you are looking down at the screen. To give your eyes a break you can turn down the brightness of your monitor and even adjust the colours. For example, reading yellow letters with a blue background is easier on the eyes.

Office Yoga

Sitting almost motionless will leave you with a tense neck, painful shoulders and lower back pains. Many complain about painful knees and some people damage their nerve endings so that they feel constant numbness in their legs if they don’t change their behaviour. Long periods of sitting cause muscles to tighten and cause pain in other areas of the body. You need to try walking around the office every now and then to ease the muscle tension. Also, try stretching while sitting at your desk to loosen up the tension in your back. This is popularly called office yoga and will not only help your body, but it will also clear your mind and stress boosting your work performance.
