Repair or Replace? 7 Tips to Save Money On Your Vehicle

Do Your Own Research

Don’t just take the word of the first mechanic you take your car to. A lot of mechanics add on charges and include suggested repairs you may not need. There are sites you can use to check what’s wrong with your car. Get a second opinion before you agree to anything.

Find the Right Mechanic

You need a mechanic you can trust. While some mechanics are trustworthy, there are some out there that will charge you for repairs you don’t need. To find the right mechanic for you, ask your friends and family who they go to. Be picky about who you let under the hood of your vehicle.

Preventative Care

Preventative care is crucial when owning a car. When you take care of your car, it will last longer. This means getting your brake pads checked regularly, checking fluid levels, checking your tires, and cleaning out your car. Too much weight and trash in your vehicle can cause premature wear on shocks and tires. Preventative care that you can do yourself, will save you money and headache in the future.

Do Repairs Sooner Than Later

The sooner you do repairs, the better off your car will be. For example, if there is a chip on the windshield, get the chip fixed immediately. Even a small chip can turn into a large crack. If you leave the chip, you will need to add windshield replacement to your list of repairs. If you have let things get to the point that you need a new windshield, make sure to find the right professional in your area. Some windshield repair and replacement companies even offer warranties. Others can add protective films on the outside of the glass to help prevent damage in the future.

Shop Around

Don’t just take the first quote that a mechanic gives you. Get a second opinion. And a third if necessary. The same thing goes with parts, especially if you don’t have a “goto” place. If you can do your own repairs, that will save you quite a bit, but it will cost you your time. When trying to find parts, shop around to make sure you are getting the best prices. Don’t get cheap parts that will break or fail prematurely, take your time. Try looking for used parts, but make sure they are of quality.

Don’t Run Straight to the Dealership

If your car is no longer under warranty, you don’t want to take it to the dealership for repairs if you don’t have to. If you take it to the dealership, you will end up paying more for routine maintenance. Instead, find a service center or local mechanic who has the capabilities of taking care of your vehicle.

Keep Your Owner’s Manual

Knowing what your user manual says can help save you money on repairs. When certain lights appear on the dashboard, they can be hard to understand. Your manual can tell you what they mean. Knowing what the problem is before you go to a mechanic will save you money.

If you take care of your car, it can last a long time. Through preventative care and finding the right mechanic, you can save a lot of money. Whatever you do, don’t take the first quote that comes to you. Shop around, compare quotes and then make the decision most in line with your budget.
